Location on Google

Help users understand how location works on Google

Challenge

Location settings can be managed across several Google products and the user journey was complex.

Solution

I wrote a single article as the source of truth for managing Location settings across Google. I simplified complicated, legally-required terms like “precise location” in to easy to understand concepts.

How I helped

  • Reduced legal jargon while accurately explaining privacy and security concepts

  • Organized content by priority and top user issues

  • Partnered with product teams to anchor to specific sections of the article from Google Search learn more links depending on the user journey

  • Ensured content was accurately localized for over 40 languages

Based on user analysis, I knew most users only wanted a high level overview of how location works. For those users, I used a bulleted list to explain location sources. I stored the details for each source in a zippy for a smaller group of users who were interested in more detailed info.

Location settings are sensitive. While this section is long, each sentence was carefully edited (and then edited again) to accurately explain key aspects of how location works and what controls the user has access to.
